The weather is perfect on the water. We have been graciously invited on board Evan Starr's sailboat "The Epiphany." Evan is dressed casually in a gray Ralph Lauren cardigan and khaki shorts, complete with gray Diesel shoes, no socks. Evan relaxes back, sitting comfortably as his piercing eyes scan the surrounding waters off the coast of the sunshine state. There is an aura Evan carries about him. It is one of excellence, of complete and utter control. While remaining silent he seems to scream success. Without speaking he says more than most words could manage. As we continue to stare at him in a totally hetero-sexual way, we notice a confliction in his eyes, one of deep thought. We have yet to say a word since setting sail, as it is obvious Evan derives a great deal of pleasure from being out here, alone in the quiet, peaceful, tranquility.
He is not alone though, and having wrapped up a photo shoot that included a third cover for this very publication, we proceed to conduct the obligatory interview. We allow him to speak at first, and he appears to find his comfort zone in simply speaking of his sailboat. "I've only invited a few people on board. Out here there is no distraction. There is no day to day grind. Out here there is ample time to reflect, to cogitate on whatever you wish. You have to work to sail, and that in itself is meditation enough." He is obviously no amateur at this, and seamlessly sends the boat in whatever direction he chooses. You don't need to know Evan to see clearly the pleasure he derives from sailing. We begin the questions subtly enough by asking how he came to love sailing so.
"Sailing represents truth to me. Pure and unadulterated. There are no lies, no betrayal. I started sailing with my father as a child. He always told me I'd understand his love for it when I got my own boat. He was right, it is now one of my favorite hobbies. I don't love it as much as winning obviously." A sly smile crosses his lips as he speaks the last words, and we accept this as an invitation to talk wrestling. Apart from a rocky stint in a promotion called USW (where he claimed the company's world title) Evan has been relatively absent from the world of professional wrestling. The business where he first burst on the scene amassing one of the most impressive rookie years in recent memory. He is hesitant at first, but soon opens up.
"When the CWF, the promotion I started in closed down, I lost a lot of my passion. I found myself aimlessly wondering, searching for a place to reclaim my glory. When I realized I may never find it, I looked to other avenues to display my multi-faceted skills." Evan indeed proved to possess many talents, landing modeling contracts and endorsement deals galore. His crossover appeal is undeniable, educated and eloquent, Evan determined to become a household name, and in that he has well succeeded. Having appeared in numerous television spots, and smaller acting roles, Evan came extremely close to sealing a deal to portray the title row in Warner Bros. "The Green Arrow." Evan holds nothing back when discussing the failed deal. "The people at Warner Bros. blew it. Plain and simple. I wanted an opt-out clause in the contract. I simply didn't want to be forced into doing a sequel without knowing what to expect from the script beforehand."
Evan shakes his head slightly as he talks about it, as if he were talking to himself, our presence now having little to do with this outpouring of contemplation. "In the end it was for the best. Portraying a comic book character is an easy way to have oneself typecast." Which leads us to the present. We gently ease the conversation in the direction of the here and now, and rumors that Evan has signed a deal with the revamped WWE helmed by the McMahon siblings. Evan is reluctant to disclose anything concrete. "I've been away from the business too long. I mean I've competed elsewhere, but not with the level of passion I once did. I feel like it's time though. Time for me too remind the world just why I am the greatest professional wrestler alive on the planet today." At this point we half expected Evan to surprise us by revealing all. Instead Mr. Starr informs us that we will be heading back toward land. It appears we have overstayed our welcome.
Being the journalists we are we capitalize on the time the return trip takes to further probe Evan about his future plans. "Whatever I do, you can rest assured it will be Earth shattering. I'm the best at what I do. Professional wrestling doesn't exist without Evan Starr. It's an impossibility. It's an oxymoron. There can be no denying that wherever I go, business will boom. I'm that once in a lifetime stud. The perfect pedigree. As much as I've missed this business, it has missed me more. It needs me far more than I need it. No matter what else I do in life though, nothing is more pleasing than wearing championship gold and leaving a trail of broken dreams in my wake. Yes, it's time. Time to remind everyone just what this business has been lacking."
Arriving back at the dock, we say our goodbyes as Evan sets sail again. It is now apparent that Evan will return to the world of professional wrestling, but the WWE rumors are still, as of now, unconfirmed. Evan Starr, a study in contrasts has given us our interview, and as cliched as it sounds, has left us with more questions than answers. HNB.
